Our History
SEMMUNA began in 1995 at Dearborn High School under the direction of Sue Zimmerman. Three schools attended.
By 1996, with just over 100 delegates attending, the Association began an annual fall conference at Dondero High School in Royal Oak. Advisor Steve Chisnell took over the position of Director of SEMMUNA at that time.
Each year the conference added more committees, more schools, and passed the big SEMMUNA gavel to future hosts. It has featured jazz bands, dance programs, and guest speakers from NGOs, Michigan politics, and the United Nations.
By 2011, the conference jumped to over 600 delegates and currently has over 800 delegates annually. The Association installed a Board of Directors in 2013 to plan the Association's future and manage accounts. Here is a partial list of host schools from the conference. Royal Oak Model United Nations served as the Conference Coordinator from 1996 till 2014 at which time Bloomfield Hills High School become the coordinating school and Matt MacLeod assumed the position of Director.
